Why the membrane matters more than the tile
Porcelain tile absorbs very little water, but the grout joints and the assembly behind them are not a barrier. Water passes through, and something behind the tile has to catch it and direct it to the drain. That something is the waterproofing system. When people describe a shower as having failed, the tile is usually intact — the water simply found a path the membrane did not close.
The main system types
| System | How it works | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bonded sheet membrane | A sheet is bonded to the substrate with thin-set; seams and corners are sealed | Consistent thickness; requires careful seam and corner work |
| Liquid-applied membrane | Rolled or brushed on in coats with reinforcing fabric at joints | Adapts to complex shapes; correct coat thickness is critical |
| Foam board panels | Waterproof boards with sealed joints form both substrate and barrier | Fast and light; fastener and joint detailing must follow instructions |
| Traditional mortar bed with liner | A liner beneath a mortar bed drains through a weep-hole drain | Long-standing method; depends on liner detailing and clear weep holes |
The details that decide performance
- Inside corners reinforced with the system's own corner pieces
- Curb fully wrapped, including the outside face and top
- Drain flange bonded to the membrane exactly as specified
- Valve and fixture penetrations sealed with the specified accessories
- Slope established in the substrate, not built up with thin-set under tile
- Movement joints at plane changes rather than rigid grout everywhere
Mixing components from different manufacturers can void warranties and create incompatibilities that are invisible until water appears. If a system is specified, use its accessories.
Questions worth asking your contractor
- 1Which specific waterproofing system will be used in my shower?
- 2Are all accessories from that same system?
- 3How will the pan slope be established?
- 4How will the curb and drain be detailed?
- 5Will the assembly be inspected or documented before tile goes on?
- 6Will I receive the product documentation at completion?
